Social engineering and why I won’t do the “bucket list” posts

You’ve seen the posts on Facebook, a friend posts something like this list that probably contained 50 items: I don’t do these much, but this one looked like fun! Bucket List – You’ll be surprised at the responses! This was fun! Been Married – yes Been divorced – yes Fell in love – Yes ….. Or any of the similar posts.  And they want you to copy it and do the same. Let me tell you why I DON’T participate. When a lot of people think […]

Can I share articles I find online on my social media networks?

Almost everything found online is copyrighted, and how it may be used is up to the copyright holder (usually but not always the person who posted it) and varies from one item to the next.  Best bet is to never copy and paste from anywhere without citing the source (such as linking to the original article).  Even citing the source doesn’t always mean you have permission to share the information. Having said that, most companies encourage social network sharing nowadays.  If their article or the […]

Someone posted an inappropriate photo on my Facebook, how do I get rid of it?

First, know this – a lot of  people assume if an inappropirate photo shows up on their Facebook timeline, it means they were hacked.  Rest easy, in most cases you were not.  What usually happens is that you received a friend request at some time, from someone you didn’t know, and you accepted it.  Then that person TAGS you in an inappropriate photo, and that photo then shows up on your timeline, and where all of your friends can see it.   The first thing […]

What to do when a friend tells you they got a second friend request on Facebook

See how to prevent this in the future […]

Just because it’s online doesn’t mean you can use it …

Do you know how to protect you and your company from claims of copyright violations? Just because it’s online doesn’t mean you can use it … The article in the link above is a good reminder of a few things: Just because you find a photograph or graphic online (or an article or song or video) doesn’t mean you have the right to use it. Search Google images for a topic, you will find thousands upon thousands of images … almost NONE of which you are […]

What information should you put on QR codes?

QR CodesI have a love/hate relationship with QR codes.   While they aren’t quite the rage they once were, when used well they can be very effective.  I love that they can be almost universally used to put potential clients in quick touch with the information you want them to have.  I hate that they are often used badly.  I really hate that once you’ve printed them, they can’t be changed on all the stuffyou have out in the world. But you can work around that!  One […]
