I get prospects who say “I want a website done this weekend” and this isn’t realistic for something that will include exquisite branding, compelling calls-to-action, increase conversions and help generate traffic. Cutting corners on your website – either time or money – is not the best use of your marketing budget at any stage of your business.

A quick turnaround may not even be possible if you haven’t already done the work required on your end – writing copy, gathering images like headshots and product photos, planning the website pages and structure. Without these pieces, your web designer will not be able to move forward as easily, which will delay your project. As a matter of fact, when a client website project gets delayed, it has always been because the client has been waiting for some of this type of information on their side. This is why we have changed our timelines somewhat, and take our clients through activities for them to complete on their side before we even touch any of the technical pieces.

Most website designs or redesigns are ready to go live within about two months (if no delays), and the finetuning can continue to occur after that point. Part of our design process is watching how visitors interact with the actual pages after the site is live (through the use of heatmap and click recordings), so that we can help tweak any pages over the course of the six months of maintenance and updates that are included.

In reality, your website will likely continue to evolve even after that point, as your business evolves.

When deciding whether or not to hire a web designer, weigh all the pros and cons carefully. Make sure you know what you want and need from the design, and be clear about your expectations up front.
