Assignments for lesson "05 Sitemap, Robots and Domains"

Assignment title and descriptionSolutions Notes / Feedback Discussion

Domain List

Create your list of domains and store this somewhere in the Cloud.  You can use our sample in Google Drive. For every domain that you own, note where it is registered (godaddy namecheap etc), where it is hosted or pointing if forwarded, and the date it renews Did you learn anything from gathering this information? Do you feel like you already had a good handle on your domains? Do you have a lot that are sitting there unused?  What else did you learn? You do not need to share your sheet, but comment in the discussion and let us know that you are done.

Robots txt

Check to make sure that Google and Bing can both access your robots.txt, and that no critical pages are being blocked. I’ve had clients who mistakenly copied some code off a random website that actually BLOCKED any search engine from being able to crawl their website.  More than one actually.  It is pretty common! Make a note in the discussion area that you have completed this, and if you learned anything.  Need help fixing one that is broken? Let us know and we can help.

Sitemap

Make sure that your website has a sitemap.  If you are using WordPress, it generates one automatically.  SEO plugins usually do this as well.  You can check this easily by typing the following into a web browser: http://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml For example, for our site here, we use: https://vickywu.us/sitemap.xml Don’t worry about what shows … just that something shows other than a blank page or 404 error.  If you already have a sitemap, submit it to Google and Bing.  If you do not, create on, and then submit. Post a link to your sitemap in the discussion area.  Don’t worry, there won’t be anything that others shouldn’t see (and the sitemap is something they can easily find anyway).
