Is there an easy explanation of SEO? | Marketing Q&A

is there an easy explanation of seo

Entrepreneur Question:

Silly Question... Is there an easy explanation of SEO? I have watched videos, read about it and I seriously just don't understand it yet, want to use it for my podcast. Any easy explanations out there?

Expert Answer:

There are no silly questions!

As someone who has done SEO for a really, really, really long time, my biggest advice is don’t think of SEO

Especially in your case, where you’re doing it for a podcast, and only have slight control over the title and description that you are giving to your uploaded episode and no ability to tweak anything else.

Instead, think of how you can help someone find your podcast.

  • What terms might they be searching for? Where?
  • What words would help them know what it’s about or answer their questions?
  • Where can you put some of that info so that they might see it?

Use an audience-first approach, which is always my recommendation for SEO whether it’s podcast, website, or whatever. Include the terms that an audience would expect to see in your title and description.

In the case of a podcast, a transcript on the page can also help (since Google still isn’t searching audio at this point).

Since SEO is all about being found by the right people, here are a few additional tips for your podcast:

  1. Backlinks: Just like with websites, backlinks to your podcast can improve its authority and ranking. Share your podcast on social media, forums, and get it reviewed to build backlinks.
  2. User Engagement: Reviews, ratings, and subscriptions can also impact how your podcast ranks. Encourage listeners to leave reviews and subscribe.
  3. Consistency: Regularly uploading episodes can signal to search engines that your podcast is active, which could potentially improve its ranking over time.
  4. Local SEO: If your podcast targets a local audience, make sure to include location-based keywords in your titles and descriptions.
  5. Social Signals: Shares, likes, and mentions on social media can also contribute, albeit indirectly, to your podcast’s SEO.
  6. Analytics: Keep an eye on your analytics to understand your audience better. This can offer insights into how to tweak your SEO strategy.

Website SEO can be more of a beast since there are numerous behind the scenes things going on, in addition to the text people see on the page. This is why I always, always recommend that entrepreneurs do not do their own SEO.

But in the case of a podcast where you do not have your own website for your show, the tips above will work for you just fine, and you can consider other options later if you ever set up a separate show site.
