As an entrepreneur, you’re likely bombarded with a constant stream of “must-try” marketing tactics – from the latest social media craze to the next revolutionary advertising platform. It can quickly become overwhelming, leaving you feeling uncertain about where to focus your precious time and resources. SQUIRREL!

But the truth is, building a successful, sustainable business doesn’t require keeping up with every new marketing trend. In fact, often the opposite is true. Simplifying your approach and honing in on the fundamentals can be the catalyst that takes your entrepreneurial journey to new heights. SHINY OBJECT!

That’s why in this guide, I’m going to share the core 7 marketing strategies every entrepreneur should know – if you only used these, you’d have a solid marketing strategy – and why 3 of the buzziest tactics might actually be better left alone (for now anyway). As a seasoned marketing executive and CEO who has guided countless businesses to success, I’ve seen firsthand what works and what’s better left on the sidelines.

Ready to streamline your marketing efforts and start driving real results? Let’s dive in.

The 7 Essential Marketing Strategies

  1. Define Your Brand Identity and Messaging

Before you can effectively market your business, you need to have a rock-solid grasp on your brand. This means crafting a clear, compelling identity – not just your visual assets, even more important is your core messaging. Get this foundation right, and it will serve as the connective tissue across all your marketing initiatives.

When defining your brand, focus on articulating your unique value proposition, brand personality, and the emotional experiences you want to evoke in your target audience. Use this brand framework to inform everything from your website copy to your social media captions. Consistency is key.

  1. Optimize Your Website for Lead Generation

I like to remind my clients that the extent of the technology today allows us to have their website work almost like an additional member of their team.

In today’s digital-first landscape, your website is often the first impression potential customers will have of your business. That’s why it’s essential to ensure it’s not only visually appealing but also highly optimized for lead generation.

Start by conducting thorough keyword research to identify the terms and phrases your ideal customers are searching for. This isn’t about SEO … it’s about meeting your audience needs. Weave these keywords seamlessly into your website content, meta tags, and page structure to boost your search engine visibility.

Then, strategically incorporate lead capture elements like email opt-in forms, content upgrades, and prominent call-to-action buttons … things I like to call microconversions.

Remember, your website should do more than just provide information – it should actively transform visitors into engaged leads and customers.

  1. Harness the Power of Email Marketing

While newer marketing tactics may grab the spotlight, email remains one of the most effective and affordable channels for entrepreneurs. By building an engaged email list and implementing a strategic nurturing plan, you can stay top-of-mind, drive repeat business, and unlock a steady stream of referrals.

Focus on creating valuable, relevant content that your subscribers will look forward to receiving. Segment your list to deliver hyper-personalized messaging, and leverage automation to streamline your email workflows. The key is to provide so much value that your audience actively anticipates your emails, rather than seeing them as just another promotional blast.

  1. Leverage LinkedIn for Thought Leadership

In the world of B2B marketing, or the lesser-known B2P marketing, LinkedIn is a goldmine for entrepreneurs looking to position themselves as industry experts and attract high-quality leads. By consistently sharing insightful content, engaging with your network, and leveraging LinkedIn’s robust targeting capabilities, you can become a recognized voice in your field.

Start by optimizing your LinkedIn profile to showcase your credentials and areas of expertise. Then, develop a content strategy that demonstrates your deep knowledge and problem-solving abilities. Whether it’s sharing original research, interviewing industry influencers, or weighing in on trending topics, position yourself as a must-follow thought leader.

  1. Implement a Consistent Social Media Strategy

While the social media landscape is constantly evolving, maintaining an active, strategic presence on the right platforms is crucial for entrepreneurs. This allows you to connect with your target audience, build brand awareness, and drive traffic back to your website.

The key is to focus on quality over quantity. Identify the 1-2 social networks where your ideal customers are most active, and create a consistent content calendar to ensure regular, valuable posting. Leverage a mix of organic and paid strategies to amplify your reach, and don’t be afraid to experiment to see what resonates best with your audience.

Be social. And be consistent.

  1. Explore Strategic Partnerships and Collaborations

One of the most powerful yet underutilized marketing tactics for entrepreneurs is tapping into complementary business relationships. By forging strategic partnerships and co-marketing initiatives, you can exponentially expand your visibility, tap into new audiences, and unlock mutually beneficial opportunities.

Look for businesses that serve a similar target market but don’t directly compete with you. Collaborate on content creation, cross-promotion, or even joint offerings. The key is to structure arrangements that provide clear value to both parties, rather than one-sided deals.

  1. Measure and Optimize Your Marketing Efforts

Finally, no marketing strategy is complete without a data-driven feedback loop. Continuously track the performance of your various tactics, looking for opportunities to refine, test, and optimize your approaches.

Pay close attention to metrics like website traffic, lead generation, email engagement, and social media reach. Use these insights to double down on what’s working, pivot away from underperforming initiatives, and make informed decisions about where to focus your marketing resources moving forward.

The 3 Trendy Marketing Tactics to Avoid (for Now)

  1. TikTok (SQUIRREL!)
    • Unless your target audience is primarily Gen Z, it’s best to avoid the time-intensive TikTok platform. While the app’s algorithm and format can be incredibly powerful for reaching new customers, it requires a significant investment of time and resources to execute a strategy effectively. For most entrepreneurs, there are more impactful ways to allocate your marketing efforts.
  2. Influencer Marketing
    • Building genuine, long-term influencer relationships that drive meaningful results takes considerable time and resources. For entrepreneurs with limited marketing budgets and bandwidth, influencer marketing (even microinfluencers) may not be the best use of your efforts – at least not until you’ve nailed down the foundational strategies we’ve covered.
  3. Metaverse/VR Marketing (SHINY OBJECT!)
    • As innovative and cutting-edge as these emerging technologies may be, the metaverse and virtual reality marketing are still in their infancy. Unless your target audience is already deeply immersed in these spaces, it’s likely not the right time to invest significant resources. Stick to the basics, and revisit these experimental tactics in a year or two when the landscape has further matured.  And yes, this is one of the areas where I’m currently having my most fun in marketing, so vising our emerging marketing page if you want to stick your toe in and see how it might work for you.
