Time For Your Business Social Media Checkup

When is the last time you updated your business social media profiles?

This is your reminder that you need to regularly refresh your social media presence. It is becoming increasingly common for a prospect – even if they were referred to you by a current client – to research your business online.

If you are like most businesses, there are multiple profiles and places they can find your information.  Have you checked lately if each of these has current content and information?

Quick contact check

Visit each of your business social media profiles and make sure all of the basics are consistent and current – your website, address, hours, logo, and any picture that are directly related (such as a photo of your storefront, or of you.)

Any that have a “bio” or “about” section, make sure that content is consistent across the board.  The amount of space or number of characters that can fit into this section varies across platforms, so make sure the most important information is featured and has the same “feel” across all.

Current posts

Also check your last post or content update.  How long ago was it?  For social media to be most effective, you need to post new content regularly.  Don’t create a page and then forget about it – it’s better to focus on a manageable few which you can update on a pretty regular basis than to have hundreds that you can’t connect.

Fresh and consistent content keeps you in front of customers and increases “top of mind awareness”.  Post about new products and sales, and show your followers what you and your business are up to.

Customer-focused

Do a quick audit of your page and determine how much of your content is focused on your customers and prospects, and how much is focused on you.  The majority of content should be customer-oriented.

Check these platforms

Here are some of the social media platforms you will want to check.

Keep in mind that your business may not have all of these (nor need them all), but some of them (such as Yelp) you may want to make sure your profile is claimed even if you didn’t set one up.  A customer can set one up and leave a review, and without claiming the profile you have no control over what appears (or to be notified when someone leaves a review).

The first group, you would likely know if you had set up a profile:

  • Facebook
  • Instagram
  • LinkedIn
  • Twitter
  • Tumblr
  • Snapchat
  • Pinterest
  • Youtube
  • Vine

Sites which may have made a page for you which you would need to claim if you have not, or that may contain reviews or recommendations (good or bad) that you have not yet seen:

  • Facebook
  • LinkedIn
  • Google+
  • Foursquare / and Swarm
  • Nextdoor
